The cutouts, designed by health educator Andrew Knight, are derived from photographs of individual people. Each image is anonymised to show one inactive character either standing or sitting. Facial expression is minimized. This passive aspect allows the participants to impose a narrative on the figure, rather than being led by the material.

The images are reproduced in flat, clear, bright colours, outlined in a fine black line, with no shading. Cutting the character out eliminates background information. For durability images are individually laminated. Images can easily be created for any ethnicity or topic.

We have also created a tool kit of props like glitter and fake “poo.” Our method encourages healthcare educators and providers to develop their own set of images and props, not only for more effective, culturally relevant messaging, but as a way to learn about the cultures in which they are working.
