Summary of Report

Natron Healthcare (NHC) was founded in 2008 to provide basic healthcare and education to two Maasai communities in Longido district, northern Tanzania, where previously no reliable healthcare existed. NHC works with existing local medical and social organizations to improve and expand services, and collaborates with village communities to promote health awareness and access to care. As of 2024, NHC continues to adapt to changing needs, aiming for sustainable, impactful, and integrated healthcare solutions. This report summarizes NHC’s activities and progress in 2023, outlines goals for 2024, and reviews financials. Key achievements include supporting the Mabel Rankin Scholarship for Girls, maintaining the Magadini School Lunch Program, and enhancing healthcare services, while challenges remain in areas like anemia testing and emergency medical services.

Like people, many organizations feel the effects of Long Covid. For NHC, already deliberating withdrawal in 2019, Covid’s forced contraction has become our new normal. Partly, this is the lack of funding that means our teaching in the field is difficult to budget; partly, it’s a choice. We are focusing on more sustained remote support such as the Mabel Rankin Scholarship for Girls and the school lunch program. We also continue to look for opportunities to share our teaching experience as well as potential consultancies.

NHC’s co-director and co-founder, Melanie Finn, was accompanied by Boniface Ngimojino, our long-time translator, and Ndapukai Mollel, a nurse from the clinic in Gelai Lumbwa. Both Ndapukai and Boniface are well known in the communities and deeply trusted. We alerted the communities that we were coming, and that one of our aims was to talk about cervical cancer. Ndapukai and I held several small teaching workshops with both men and women (separately), and Boniface conducted this survey with participants in bomas who had not come to the workshops.
